Two leagues. Three controversies. One teenage superstar. Cricket is already burning in 2026.
It is only March 31 — and cricket has already given us a record-breaking fifty from a 15-year-old, the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history, a ball-tampering scandal that could end in a ban, and two mouth-watering fixtures tonight. Here is everything you need to know from the world of cricket today — in one place.
⚡ IPL 2026 — Match 3: RR Crush CSK as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Announces Himself
Result: Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets
CSK: 127 all out (19.4 overs) | RR: 128/2 (12.1 overs)
If you missed the RR vs CSK match on March 30, you missed one of the defining moments of IPL 2026. Rajasthan Royals dismantled a depleted Chennai Super Kings with a performance that was near-perfect in every department — and at the heart of it was a 15-year-old from Bihar who is rapidly becoming the most exciting young batter on the planet.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked to the crease and immediately looked like a man — or rather, a teenager — on a mission. Dropped on the first ball he faced by Kartik Sharma off Matt Henry, he punished the very next delivery with a six. He never looked back. 15 balls later, he had reached his fifty — the joint third-fastest half-century in IPL history, alongside Jake Fraser-McGurk, Yusuf Pathan, Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Narine. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal (13 balls), KL Rahul, Pat Cummins and Romario Shepherd (14 balls each) have done it faster.
He finished with 52 off 17 balls — four fours and five sixes — before Anshul Kamboj finally had him caught at deep cover. By then, RR needed only 53 more runs off 84 balls with 8 wickets in hand. Game over.
For CSK, the day could hardly have gone worse. Sanju Samson — making his CSK debut after his record Rs 18 crore trade from RR — was cleaned up by Nandre Burger for just 6. Ruturaj Gaikwad went for 6. Ayush Mhatre made 0. At 19 for the loss of 3 wickets in the powerplay, CSK were already deep in trouble. Only Jamie Overton (43 off 36) showed any resistance as CSK were bowled out for 127 — a total that was never going to be enough at the Barsapara Stadium.
RR's bowling was equally impressive. Jofra Archer (2/19), Nandre Burger (2/27) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/18) — the man who spent nine seasons at CSK — shared six wickets between them. Jadeja's two wickets against his old side were particularly poetic.
The absence of MS Dhoni continues to hang over CSK like a cloud. We covered the full story of Dhoni's injury and its impact on CSK in our IPL 2026 opening day preview.

🚨 PSL 2026 — The Controversy Factory
If IPL 2026 has given us brilliant cricket, PSL 2026 has given us brilliant cricket — plus an almost daily supply of controversy. The last 48 hours have produced three major stories that have dominated headlines across Pakistan and beyond.
1. Naseem Shah — Pakistan Cricket's Biggest Ever Fine 💸
This is the story that has shocked Pakistani cricket. Fast bowler Naseem Shah has been fined PKR 2 crore (approximately $72,000) — the largest financial penalty in Pakistan cricket history — after a social media post from his account criticised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The post appeared on Naseem's official X account on March 26, questioning why Maryam Nawaz — who attended the PSL 2026 opening match at Gaddafi Stadium while the tournament is being played behind closed doors due to Pakistan's fuel crisis — was being given VIP treatment. The post was deleted within minutes. Naseem then claimed his account had been hacked.
The PCB was unconvinced. A three-member disciplinary committee held a hearing on March 30, where Naseem offered an unconditional apology and confirmed his social media adviser had been fired. The PCB accepted the apology — and still hit him with the record fine. Naseem's social media manager has also been blacklisted from working with any player under PCB jurisdiction.
The fine is equivalent to roughly eight months of Naseem's central contract salary. It has sparked fierce debate in Pakistan about player rights, freedom of expression, and the relationship between cricket and politics.
2. Fakhar Zaman — Ball Tampering Verdict Awaited 🔴
The other major PSL controversy involves Fakhar Zaman of Lahore Qalandars, who has been charged with a Level 3 ball tampering offence after an incident in Lahore's defeat to Karachi Kings.
The incident took place at the start of the final over of Karachi's chase — with Kings needing 14 runs to win. Fakhar, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf were seen handling the ball together near the bowler's run-up. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi intervened, and after lengthy discussions, ruled that the ball had been tampered with. Karachi were awarded 5 penalty runs, reducing their target, and the ball was replaced. Karachi won by 4 wickets.
Fakhar has denied the charges. Match referee Roshan Mahanama has conducted two hearings — the final verdict is expected today or tomorrow. A Level 3 offence carries a minimum one-match ban and maximum two-match ban for a first PSL violation. Lahore Qalandars have stood firmly behind their player, and legal action is reportedly being considered if a penalty is imposed.
Shaheen Afridi, who was seen handling the ball during the same incident, was separately fined PKR 1 million for a security protocol breach — escorting four unauthorised visitors into his hotel room.
3. Tonight's PSL Fixture — Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi
Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi
Venue: Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
Time: 7:00 PM PKT
Islamabad United — one of PSL's most successful franchises — make their tournament debut tonight against Peshawar Zalmi. Both teams are yet to play, making this a crucial first fixture for both sides. Given the controversy swirling around PSL right now, all eyes will be on the cricket to speak for itself tonight.
🌍 The Bigger Picture
The controversies in PSL 2026 don't exist in isolation. They are happening against the backdrop of a tournament being played behind closed doors, in a country dealing with a serious fuel crisis, while a geopolitical conflict in the Middle East continues to reshape global cricket logistics. We covered this in detail in our full analysis of the cricket crisis piece here.
The fact that both leagues are running — and producing brilliant cricket — remains remarkable. But the off-field stories of PSL 2026 are threatening to overshadow the cricket itself. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi will need to act decisively to restore order and credibility to the tournament.
